Ultrasound is a high-frequency sound wave that is produced when electricity passes through a quartz crystal. The sound waves create vibrations deep in tissue that cause a heating effect. The sound waves cause tissue vibration rather than heating when they are pulsed. The sound waves help with nutrition exchange and cell healing. Ultrasound has been shown to be beneficial for healing ligaments and, clinically speaking, for muscle spasm and carpal tunnel syndrome.
